Moondrop - Variations

Utilizing a highly refined 2EST+2BA+1DD Tribrid technology, the Moondrop Variations carries 2 electrostatic drivers, 2 balanced armature drivers and 1 dynamic driver. Also known as an electric electro-acoustic transducer, the dynamic driver fitted in the Variations can generate displacement by energizing the conductor in a constant magnetic field. The balanced armature drivers on the other hand are placed using vibrating ferromagnetism and coil parts that are installed in the magnetic circuit. Therefore when alternating current runs within the coil, it leads to the creation of an alternating magnetic field. The electrostatic drivers, which are also known as capacitive electroacoustic transducers, use the repulsive force of the electrostatic field to produce sound.

Right from the time of their inception, electrostatic in-ear earphones have been often criticized as being 'difficult to drive' or having an 'unacceptable tone'. With the Moondrop Variations, Moondrop applies its expertise in developing EST+BA hybrid & EST+DD hybrid earphones to deal with such issues. Adopting 3D printing allowed the Variations to have a precise physical filter structure and frequency divider circuit that ensures exceptional amplitude-frequency response and phase-frequency response. This forms the core for perfect sound harmony and imaging offered by the Variations.

The ergonomic design of these multi-unit composite earphones fits perfectly into the contours of your ears elevating comfort and sonic performance. Paired with a medical-resin 3D printing acoustic cavity, the Moondrop Variations is designed with a hand-polished, sandblasted and skin-friendly design. This textured design enhances wearing comfort and in-ear fit. The fusion of fine sandblasting stainless steel panel and frosted cavity defines the elegance of the overall design.

The bass driver of the Moondrop Variations contains the all-new 10mm liquid crystal diaphragm composite copper inner cavity diaphragm. Moreover, the driver is also supported with balanced compliance and damping. This enriches physical band-pass filtering for bass and medium-high frequency low-pass smoothing filtering. There are 2 balanced armature drivers as well that are customised by Softears that promote transient response and detailed audio. The accurate RC low-pass filter circuit, high pass filter circuit and equalization circuit empower the Variations to display ideal frequency response and phase indicators. It also upgrades amplitude frequency that supplements the Tribrid driver system. The treble driver of the Variations adopts Sonion's one-to-two compound double electrostatic tweeter that is known for its efficiency, dynamic and excellent resolution for the highs.

To achieve physical filtering internal structure with precision and without any kind of acoustic structure error, the Moondrop Variations employs the 3D printing process by “Heygears Technology" and pairs it alongside imported medical-grade UV resin leading to a highly precise, transparent, and accurate sound.

The advanced transducer unit, rigorous acoustic structure design, meticulously polished physical filtering and crossover circuits lead to outstanding results in both linear and nonlinear distortions. The frequency response of the Moondrop Variations was fine-tuned by Moondrop's VDSF Target Response (measured by linking B&K HATS diffusion field HRTF and room reverberation curve) to offer pure and accurate sound.

The consistent full-frequency phase of the Moondrop Variations reduces common connection errors that are often found in multi-unit tribrid earphones. The uniform frequencies across the Variations helps it to sound more pure and authentic. Moreover, due to the reliable unit configuration, the total harmonic distortion across frequencies is below 1%. Additionally, the odd and even harmonics are uniformly dispersed while the overall sound is coherent and clear.

Adopting the Moondrop standard 0.78 dual-pin universal replaceable earphone cable, the Variations allows its cables to be upgraded. These cables are made of PCC coaxial 6NOCC single crystal copper wires and end with optional terminations: the 3.5mm single-ended, 2.5mm balanced or 4.4mm balanced plug.
